Logic Puzzles for Kids

Logic is using clues and rules to work out what must be true, and ruling out what can’t be. These puzzles ask children to reason, not guess, from odd-one-out for preschoolers to sudoku and bridges.

Why it matters

Reasoning step by step and explaining why is at the heart of maths at every level, and it carries into reading, science and everyday decisions.

How to help

  • Ask “how do you know?” after a good move.
  • Encourage ruling things out out loud: “it can’t go there because…”.
  • Let them be stuck for a while before stepping in; that’s where the reasoning happens.

In the curriculum

Construct arguments and reason (Common Core MP2, MP3; MOE Reasoning, communication and connections).
